Fuel cards are particularly secure due to several key factors. Firstly fuel cards are not such a target for thieves and fraudsters as their value to others is intrinsically nothing. Why is this?

Well a fuel card can usually only be used by one vehicle. It cannot be used by multiple vehicles as it carries the registration number on the back. If it is used to fill up vehicles other than the specified vehicle then the client can claim back the money spent as it should not have been put through in the first place.

Fuel cards are exactly that. They are cards to buy fuel, not cigarettes, cans or pop, magazines, sandwiches, pies or anything else you can think of. For this reason they do not have a value to a fraudster. Plus employees cannot abuse the system either, as they are only good for buying fuel.

In fact some fuel cards go further than that. Some fuel cards are only able to buy certain types of fuel. This makes it even harder for them to be abused. Often the trick is to turn up at the petrol station in the company vehicles and then fill up a petrol can with fuel for the personal car. But if the car takes petrol and the van takes diesel then this scam will not work, even if you do take the van along to fool the petrol station attendant.
