Rural Fuel Stations in Jeopardy

Those living in or working in rural areas may find some troubling news with regards to rural petrol stations. The Retail Motor Industry Federation has predicted that about 500 petrol stations in rural areas will be closed within the next 12 months. This will not only cost drivers places to get fuel, but it will also reduce the job market by 5,000.

In 1990 there were roughly 20,000 petrol stations. However, there are about 8,850 petrol stations right now in the UK. 2,000 of those are considered rural in class. The government is being urged to stop the fuel duty tax by these petrol stations and drivers.

Drivers fear paying the higher costs at the pump and rural petrol station owners fear they will lose their clientele. Anyone with fuel cards has to be wary as well. Fuel cards are based on specific fuel stations. If more than half the stations close that the fuel card can be used at, drivers will have to find alternative fuel stations and pay higher prices. These fears are not unfounded considering by Easter a family car could cost up to 70 pounds to fill the tank. These growing fears are causing many businesses to seek out other fuel cards too.
